While they can be seen throughout the year, flamingos are most commonly spotted between November and March, when small groups may gather in the wetlands. Encounter the Purple Swamphen 

While not usually seen on our eco boat tours, the purple swamphen is one of Ria Formosa Natural Park’s most distinctive birds and a highlight for visitors exploring on foot. Recognised as the park’s symbol, this striking species stands out with deep indigo plumage, a bright red beak, and vivid red legs. Often found foraging near reed beds or walking gracefully through the freshwater ponds, purple swamphens are best observed on guided walks in areas like Ludo, where the wetlands provide ideal habitat for this wetland specialist.

The Mediterranean chameleon is one of Ria Formosa’s most intriguing — and hard-to-spot — residents.
