The sight of flamingos taking off in a pink blur is one of Ria Formosa’s most iconic scenes. These elegant birds stop here during their migration, feeding in the nutrient-rich salt pans and lagoons. While they can be seen throughout the year, flamingos are most commonly spotted between November and March, when small groups may gather in the wetlands. Still, sightings are never guaranteed—after all, they are wild animals, free to roam as they please. You can learn more with our guide to Les Meilleurs Endroits pour Trouver des Flamants Roses en Algarve.

Encounter the Purple Swamphen

While not usually seen on our eco boat tours, the purple swamphen is one of Ria Formosa Natural Park’s most distinctive birds and a highlight for visitors exploring on foot. Recognised as the park’s symbol, this striking species stands out with deep indigo plumage, a bright red beak, and vivid red legs. Often found foraging near reed beds or walking gracefully through the freshwater ponds, purple swamphens are best observed on guided walks in areas like Ludo, where the wetlands provide ideal habitat for this wetland specialist.

Admire Birdlife Galore in Ria Formosa

While we have picked out two notable bird species in the park, Ria Formosa is abounding with birdlife, over 220 species to be exact! Everyone from amateur enthusiasts to ornithologists flocks to Ria Formosa for a chance to spot and photograph the exceptional birdlife. Spot the Elusive Mediterranean Chameleon

The Mediterranean chameleon is one of Ria Formosa’s most intriguing — and hard-to-spot — residents. Of course, what makes it so elusive is the fact that it changes its color according to its surroundings. While you’re unlikely to see one from the boat, tours that include land visits to the islands offer the chance for a lucky viewing. If you’re interested in discovering Ria Formosa’s islands, make sure to book one of our Excursions en Bateau sur la Ria Formosa en Privé!

Meet the Local Otters

Ria Formosa is home to the Eurasian otter, a shy but charismatic mammal that thrives in the tranquil waterways of the park. Spotting one is a rare treat, with the best chances during early morning or dusk boat tours. Look out for telltale ripples on the surface — or, if you’re lucky, a pair tumbling in the water. Even if you don’t see them, you may spot their prints left in the mudflats!

Learn about Ria Formosa’s Endangered Seahorses

Ria Formosa was once home to the world’s largest population of seahorses, including both short-snouted and long-snouted species. Sadly, their numbers have sharply declined due to illegal fishing and the loss of vital seagrass beds. Today, these endangered creatures are protected within designated conservation zones that are off-limits to visitors in order to support their recovery. While we can’t access these sensitive areas during our tours, our expert guides are always happy to share fascinating insights about the seahorses’ habitat, behaviour, and the vital work being done to protect them.

Tips for Wildlife Watching in Ria Formosa

  • Bring binoculars: This is especially useful for birdwatching or spotting distant marine life like otters.
  • Keep a respectful distance: Avoid loud noises and sudden movements, especially near nesting birds or sensitive species. Do not attempt to reach out for or touch any animal.
  • Wear natural colors: Earth tones help you blend into the surroundings and reduce the chance of startling wildlife.
  • Prepare a wildlife checklist: If there are any species you’re keen on spotting, keep a checklist and mark off the ones you see.
  • Bring a good camera: You’ll want to capture the incredible sights, so pack a camera with a good lens if you can!
