Description

On this private tour, we explore the protected marshes of Castro Marim. This wetland in the Eastern Algarve is a great birdwatching spot and has been listed among the 10 most important wetlands for birds in Portugal.

Have a great time out discovering a birdwatchers paradise in the Algarve. Make the most of your time as your knowledgeable local guide shows you the great diversity of birds of this important wetland in the Algarve.

The marshes of Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo Antonio are located in the eastern end of the Algarve near the mouth of the Guadiana river, a long and beautiful stretch of the Portuguese–Spanish border.

The habitats of this wetland host a great variety of birds and include salt marshes, tidal canals, creeks, cultivated fields, pasture, carob plantations and saltpans from where the famous salt of the Algarve is extracted. Some of the most noticeable species are the Greater Flamingo which can be found here year round and Black-winged Stilt elected the symbol of this nature reserve.

With a record of almost 200 different species of birds, this site treats us with good views of Pied Avocet, Black-tailed Godwit, Kentish Plover, Spoonbill and White Stork. This is the only place in Portugal where the Lesser Short-toed Lark nests and some of the other local specialities are the Stone Curlew, the Little Bustard, the Southern Grey Shrike and Audouin’s Gull.

The Castro Marim marshes are one of the best places to observe the rare Slender-billed Gull and during the coldest period of the year, we have also fairly good chances to observe other species like the Black-necked Grebe and Caspian Tern.

The colorful Bee-eater, the Collared Pratincole, the Shelduck, the Montagu’s Harrier and beach-nesting Little Tern are frequent encountered during the breeding period and are some of the season’s highlights. Castro Marim also attracts the Great Spotted Cuckoo, in fact, this is one of the best places in the Algarve to see this beautiful bird.

Join us on a birdwatching tour in this beautiful site. All this diversity of birdlife is definitely worthy of a visit and we promise you a memorable day out filled with birds.

During this tour, some of the locations visited include the marshes of Venta Moinhos, the saltpans of Cerro do Bufo and the Carrasqueira creek. We access these locations driving but due to its vulnerability, the area is explored mostly on foot. Please note that access to some of the areas of this nature reserve is strictly for conservation purposes and visits are not allowed. While on tour, please be so kind to follow the guidelines of your tour leader.

Birdwatching tours are available every day throughout the year with several daily departures from Faro and Tavira.
