On this private tour, we explore the Ria Formosa’s headquarters at Quinta de Marim. It’s an excellent birdwatching spot where you will enjoy the very best of the Algarve bird life.
Put on your birding hat and have a brilliant time out birdwatching in Portugal’s third largest wetland area. Your enthusiastic tour leader will show as many local birds as possible to make the most of your outing in the Algarve.
The headquarters of the protected area of Ria Formosa have a wide variety of habitats, including pine forest, Mediterranean scrub forest, freshwater lagoons, saltpans, dunes, beaches and extensive mudflats making it very interesting for woodland birds and waterfowl.
During this tour, good views of many species of waders, terns, gulls and other aquatic birds are possible on the marshland area. A visit to the existing tide mill is also planned due to its lovely views towards the Armona island. Facing the Atlantic waters, the islands of Ria Formosa are protecting the lagoon that hosts various species of waders especially when the tide is low.
The existing freshwater pond offers a good chance to view the exquisite Purple Swamphen, elected the symbol of this protected area. The surrounding pine woodlands are an excellent habitat not only for the hard to miss Azure-winged Magpie, the Hoopoe but also for the rare Chameleon.
Due to its range of habitats, this site also offers good chances for the Sardinian and Dartford Warbler, Zitting Cisticola and many other interesting passerines.
All over the year, species like Spoonbill, Black-winged Stilt, Avocet and Kentish Plover can be observed. Some of the breeders worth mentioning are the beach-nesting Little Tern, Great Spotted Cuckoo, Woodchat Shrike and the lovely Red-rumped Swallow.
Join us on a birdwatching tour in this beautiful site. We promise you a memorable day out filled with birds.
Birdwatching tours are available every day throughout the year with several daily departures from Faro and Olhão.
